Pemba Island

Where is Pemba Island found?

Pemba (the main Zanzibar Island) is about 50km north of Unguja and roughly 80km from mainland Tanzania in the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Pemba is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The feeling of being in this place is otherworldly, lush, rugged & hilly terrain, and blissful.

How to get there

By water, you can take a ferry from Zanzibar or the mainland town of Tanga that takes about 4-6hours, depending on the water conditions.

By air, which is the fastest option, is a 30-45-minute flight from Zanzibar (Unguja) or Dar-es-Salaam to Pemba Airport (Chake Chake Airport). These flights offer stunning aerial views of coral reefs and tropical forests.

What to expect and see

Pemba Island is often referred to as “The Green Island” for its rolling hills, clove plantations, Mangrove forests and sparkling Lagoons. Much unlike its busier sister Zanzibar, Pemba offers villages, unspoiled beaches and authentic Swahili culture.

Chake Chake, the main town (the capital of Pemba), is a sleepy coastal hub with friendly locals and a lively harbour. History lovers can enjoy exploring ancient ruins, while nature enthusiasts can wander through spice farms, mangrove channels and forest reserves teeming with rare bird species and fruit bats.

The coral reefs that are among the richest and most vibrant in East Africa attract drivers from around the world

Colourful marine life, pristine coral gardens, and crystal clear waters all without crowds.

Ngezi forest reserve, which is home to flying foxes, monkeys and a variety of birdlife

Misali Island Marine Reserve, which is a tourist’s paradise with coral reefs, dolphins and nesting sea turtles that is ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Ras Kigomasha Peninsula that offers scenic cliffs, lighthouses and captivating ocean views.

Pujini Ruins, the remains of a 15th-century Swahili fortress, give a glimpse into Pemba’s ancient history.
