Overview

Tarangire National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a captivating destination known for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. Established in 1970, the park covers approximately 2,850 square kilometers, encompassing a diverse range of habitats including savannahs, swamps, and the life-giving Tarangire River, which draws wildlife during the dry season. The climate here is marked by a distinct dry season from June to October and a wet season from November to May, each offering unique viewing experiences. Tarangire is famed for its large elephant herds and majestic baobab trees, some of which are centuries old. Visitors can also encounter an impressive variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and over 500 bird species such as the endemic Ashy starling and the vibrant yellow-collared lovebird. The park’s flora is equally diverse, with sprawling acacia woodlands and lush riverine forests.

What to See

Elephants: Tarangire is known for its large herds of elephants, which can be seen throughout the park.

Lions: The park is home to a large population of lions, so keep an eye out for these majestic creatures. 

Leopards: Although more elusive than lions, leopards can be spotted in the park if you’re lucky. 

Giraffes: Tarangire is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see both Masai and reticulated giraffes.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Tarangire National Park is from July to October, when the park is dry and wildlife is concentrated around the Tarangire River.

Getting there

By Air: Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport and take a connecting flight to Arusha. From Arusha, it’s a scenic drive to Tarangire National Park.

By Road: Tarangire is accessible by road, with well-maintained routes connecting it to Arusha and other major Tanzanian cities. Road trips offer a chance to soak in the beauty of the African landscapes.
