City History
Originally inhabited by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people, Lagos was a collection of islands and fishing villages. In the 15th century, Portuguese explorers arrived, naming it “Lagos” after a coastal town in Portugal. By the late 16th century, it had become a major center for the transatlantic slave trade under the rule of the Oba of Benin, influencing its early economic and social structure.
